Definitions of Types of Pain

  • Nerve Block Anesthesia which is injected near the inflamed nerve using fluoroscopy to decrease pain/inflamation.

  • Spinal Cord Stimulation SCS uses a small implanted device to generate tiny electrical pulses that replace the feeling of pain with a tingling or massaging sensation.

  • Implantable Drug Delivery System An implantable drug delivery system provides a way of delivering medication directly to your spinal cord, greatly reducing the amount of narcotics needed for pain relief.

  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS or TeNS) is the popularized name for electrical stimulation produced by a portable stimulator and used to treat pain.

  • Injections An epidural steroid injection delivers steroids directly into the epidural space in the spine which reduces inflammation and pain.

  • Radiofrequency Neural Ablation This procedure is done by heating the nerve with an electrode placed near it to destroy the nerve.

  • Intrathecal Catheters The intrathecal catheter creates a pathway for medication flowing from a pump for delivery to the pain site.
